When 98% Is Not Enough…
This whole sequester thing is truly astonishing. Everyone in America has different opinions, and there is more than one political party or political faction. This requires compromise. Anything other than compromise leads to this notion that only one faction is, or could ever be, correct. That’s not only false, but dangerous for any democracy.
But instead, we see Boehner saying “I got 98% of what I wanted” (but still won’t or can’t make a deal with Democrats). How is this possible? How is this considered sane by even those who vote Republican or conservative? I just don’t get it.
In 2010, Republicans and the Tea Party caused the first ever credit downgrade in America’s history. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, they actually threatened – for the first time in U.S. history – not to pay our bills. In 2013, they carried out the first ever filibuster of a cabinet nomination. Even though they accuse the other side of failing to compromise, there’s really too much evidence they’re just lying – and there’s still that “98%” comment straight from the Republican leader.
Good politicians should work to reduce government waste and debt. We all agree on that. But, any politician who would put this dogma above all other considerations – threatening not to pay our bills, damage our credit, destroy existing jobs and benefits – is someone simply unfit to serve.
Regardless of which party you follow, it should be clear these yahoos are playing games of brinkmanship, that make our markets, business and the world more and more nervous about us every day. Ask anyone from any other country what they think of American politics today, and you’ll get the same answer: “Are Republicans crazy?”
It’s time to for Republican and Tea Party leaders to compromise. And, by compromise, I mean accepting the very tax proposals put forth by their own nominee for president, Mitt Romney, who wanted to close tax loopholes to increase revenues – and still getting 98% of what they wanted.
Any rational person would see that last sentence as complete proof of just how far the Republican leadership has gone off the tracks. And, most people who study these things would quickly recognize the Republican party tactics as an attempt to change the United States of America into a one party state.
When getting 98% of what they want, still isn’t enough for any politician or party, then you can be 100% certain that politician and party is damaging your nation. It’s time for Democrats, Independents and all others to unite and end this hostage crisis, once and for all.
